Colors and Dhrama Prod. seal-the-deal with 12 films for four years

Counted as one of Bollywood’s most successful production company, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has signed an agreement with Viacom18 Networks’ Hindi entertainment offering Colors. In what is said to one of the biggest satellite deals in the recent times, the deal shall cover the production house’s 12 films over the next four years.

Though sources close to the development have confirmed the news, when Adgully tried to touch-base with the parties involved in this upscale deal, they however remained unavailable for any comments. Sources and industry watchers pegged the deal to be between 275 crore and 350 crore. Out of the 12 films in the deal, just one has been released. The rest will be made over the next four years.

Colors, in a span of mere five years, has managed to create produce differentiated content thus garnering good numbers amidst stiff competition from well established players in the GEC space. Johar, who is now a regular face at the judging panel of non-fiction shows at Colors like India’s Got Talent and Jhalak Dikhlaja, evidently perceives the deal as a valuable one.

In the past, in the chase for seizing exclusive rights of films, channels have paid giant sums immediately as they were announced. But now while a base sum is certain, every subsequent slab is correlated to the box office performance of the film. Nayak's last big procurement of films was a nine-film deal with Eros last year.
