Indian & Pakistani shows are similar yet different: Achint Kaur

She began her career with Zee TV’s Banegi Apni Baat back in 1994 and has grown over to be known as versatile actress on Indian television. Besides working in some of the popular drama series, Achint has also played crucial roles in Hindi films like Om Jai Jagadish, Corporate and Julie. She has also won numerous awards for her strong character driven roles.

While in conversation with Adgully, Achint Kaur shared her love for television, about her new role in Zee TV’s Jamai Raja, her career experiences and more…

While Achint has been missing from the television circuit for a while now, speaking about what brings her back to television, she said, “As much as I was missing from TV, I personally was missing TV too and hence, I had to come back! I wanted to try my hands in other things and was also looking for a break; but once that was done, TV is where I headed to”.

While everyone has a desire and willingness to do something different and unusual; Achint also, looked to be a part of something that she has not done before. “About few months back I decided that I want to come back on television and wanted a character which will suit me. I believe Jamai Raja as a story appealed to me the most”, she said.

Alongside her Indian television shows, Achint is also a part of popular shows from across the border such as Piya Ka Ghar and more.

While having worked on both sides of the border, sharing her experiences, she said, “Actually, you just can’t compare both the industries. They are equally good and different in their own way at the same time. For example, Pakistani TV shows are very natural in terms of acting whereas our Indian shows sometimes tend to go above the line; Pakistani shows come across as very real because they are mostly based on social issues and their social issues are quite different from ours whereas in India, we follow a slightly filmy style and add drama to most of the things. There the shows are short and crisp and easier to follow and act in too; however, back here in India, the length of the shows is usually on the higher side”.

While of the characters she played were negative in nature, she mentions that she never liked to play extreme negative characters on TV or films. “Out of Pallavi in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki and Mandira in Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, I feel Pallavi’s character was still ok”, she quipped.

Currently Achint is playing the role of Durga Devi aka DD in Zee TV’s Jamai Raja, a sophisticated South Mumbai mother-in-law and a known Jewellery Designer. “I like my character as it’s not extremely negative and that added advantage is that I am playing multiple roles – a business woman, mother, daughter and above all a mother-in-law. I am one of the central characters in the show and more importantly I am getting to play my age!” she concluded. [By Ranjana Gupta| Twitter: @RGrightsreserve]
