M&M is very keen to have a global venture for the high-end market, said a top company official. In case if M&M is able to launch these premium end bikes, it will be competing with the high performance bikes like – Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Ducati, Harley Davidson and Kawasaki.
As per media reports, a company official said, “Having inspirational high-performance bikes with latest global technology in its portfolio would help M&M to make an impact in the highly competitive bike market.”
After acquiring Pune based Kinetic in September 2009, M&M entered the two-wheeler market with gearless scooters. It will enter the mid-segment market with a 110-125 cc bike, to be followed by a high-end bike this year.
As reported by media, Anoop Mathur, President (two-wheeler sector), M&M said, “The mass motorcycle is being developed ground up by M&M together with Italy-based Engines Engineering and Taiwan’s Sanyang Industry Co. The premium bike will be a collaborative effort as the branding and image associated with it, is important. The bike will be made at the company’s Pithampur plant.”
The Indian two-wheeler market grew by 22 per cent at 67.79 lakh units during April-December 2009 with motorcycles accounting for 53.39 lakh units and scooters 10.18 lakh units, as per media reports.
