Its time to add ‘Buzz’ in Gmail

Google Inc, recently, launched Dubbed Google Buzz – it is a new service that allows users to post and browse content, to bring social updates like – photos, web links into Gmail and few Google mobile products. It is in competition with Facebook, Twitter, Orkut and other social media sites where people go to check up on their friends.

In detail, with Dubbed Google Buzz people can choose to follow content from other Google users and Google tries to figure out what’s relevant, surfacing some updates directly into a users’ inbox. Users can consume the stream of information through a left hand menu under a user’s inbox. Beginning soon, users will also be able to post and view updates from Google’s mobile Web site or Buzz mobile software application.

“It is a new world inside of Gmail. There has always been a giant social network beneath Gmail,” said Todd Jackson, product manager, Buzz, describing the service, as per media reports.

However, the Goggle’s Buzz service borrows features from a variety of social media sites, for e.g. Buzz allows people to post content publicly or privately and comment on posts, just like Facebook. It also allows users to follow others, like Twitter.

As reported by media, Bradley Horowitz, a vice president of the company on borrowed features said, “Google believes there is room for a new service that better handles the flood of social data and helps users see what they want to see. We are the first folks seriously thinking about relevancy. Google’s core competency is relevance.”

Facebook, on the Google Buzz said, “The Company hadn’t used Google Buzz but was supportive of technologies that help make the web more social and the world more open. We are interested to see how Google Buzz progresses over time.”

Going forward, Buzz plans to distinguish itself by helping people aggregate other social sites. To start, users can connect Buzz to other Google Web sites, along with Twitter and Yahoo Inc.’s Flickr. On aggregation, Jackson said connecting the service to Facebook in the future was something to think about.

On advertising, Horowitz said Buzz contains no advertising right now. He believes that the service will eventually introduce lots of new opportunities for ads as people grow accustomed to discovering new information through sharing in addition to searching.

Horowitz further adds Google plans to ‘wire’ Buzz into other Google Web sites like – Google Wave, a collaboration service that Google began testing publicly last year. The company also plans to roll it out to enterprise users, as per media reports.
