To prevent students commiting suicide, radio channel Radio City and Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Priya Dutt organised a social awareness initiative, ‘Aji Dil toh Bachcha haiji’. RJs Salil & Archanaa , kept the emotional quotient of Radio City’s breakfast show‘Kasa Kai Mumbai’ alive as they hosted the event, connecting with children, parents and teachers at St. Joseph’s Convent High School, Bandra.

The event witnessed counsellors talking on the concept, a Radio City Talent Express, a panel discussion on ‘Effective Parenting’ and a magical performance by the little stars of the movie‘Bum Bum Bole’ – Darsheel and Ziyah, that run home a message of pursuing talent beyond academics.

Priya Dutt says, “The number of student suicides in our country is alarming. All these show that something is not right. I do associate with organizations like FLY for the initiative ‘Life is Beautiful’ and so this cause from Radio City – ‘Aji Dil toh Bachcha haiji’ to make students realize that success is not everything and life is a gift of god is a very special one.”

The most significant part of the event was a panel discussion on ‘Effective Parenting’ held between Priya Dutt and eminent people from various fields, which included Dr. Henal Shah, President, Bombay Psychiatric society and Associate Professor, Dept of Psychiatry, Nair Hospital, who has conducted a study on ‘Psychological Aspects of Academic Failure in Children’, Lina Ashar – Founder & Chairperson- Kangaroo Kids Education Limited, Dr. Vaidyanathan – MD, DCH, paediatrician, author of the popular book ‘Make your Child Stress Free’ and Kumar Nilendu – General Manager development support, CRY – Child Rights & You.

Apurva Purohit, CEO, Radio City 91.1FM shares her views on this initiative, “Through ‘Aji Dil toh Bachcha Haiji’ we aim to communicate that the world is not just about mark sheets or an aimless rat race. Marks don’t always make one successful in life. Every child is unique, understanding their strengths and helping them hone their skills is the best support one can offer their child. This is an extension of our programming philosophy of connecting with people emotionally and making a difference in their lives.”

The discussion brought to light many pertinent issues around the reasons behind suicides – academic, peer and parental pressures, the support system for kids, counselling and combating stress, the symptoms of stress in your child, the Indian education system, parent-child divide and lots more. This session definitely ran home a message to parents on the importance of shifting a child’s focus to enjoying his childhood or teenage as opposed to giving in to the much hyped competition in every sphere of life, becoming part of the rat race.
