PTC Punjabi Film Awards 2013: Winners announced!

The PTC Punjabi Filmi Awards 2013 were held on Friday evening at a glittering entertainment extravaganza attended by a galaxy of stars from Punjabi Films and Bollywood, and the crème de la crème of celebrities at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Mohali. An enthralled audience of 6000 watched engrossed, as spectacular entertainment acts interspersed the presentation of 28 awards.

Diljit Dosanjh won Best Actor, Neeru Bajwa bagged Best Actress, and Anurag Singh won Best Director, all for the year's biggest blockbuster, Jatt n Juliet, which  bagged the highest number of popular awards, seven. Mirza - The Untold Story, which bagged 6 popular and 1 critics awards, and Carry on Jatta, with 4 popular and 2 critics awards, were in second and third place respectively.

Sameep Kang won the critics award for best director for Carry On Jatta, which also bagged the Critics' Award for Best Film. Gippy Garewal, who bagged the Critics Award for Best Actor for his  role in Mirza - The Untold Story, was also awarded the Most Popular Star of the Year award.

Sunny Deol along with Raveena Tandon and PTC Network Director &CEO Rajiee M Shinde and PTC Network President R Narayan presented the Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously to one of the most popular Punjabi and Bollywood stars of all time, the late Dara Singh. His son Vindu Dara Singh accepted the award.

The second Lifetime Achievement Award was again a posthumous one, presented to one of India’s most loved humorists and satirists, the late Jaspal Bhatti. It was accepted by Mrs Savita Bhatti ji, and presented to her by Raveena Tandon, along with PTC Network’s Rajiee M Shinde and R Narayan.

Interestingly, the best playback singing awards for both, male and female, were bagged by Bollywood singers. Sunidhi Chauhan bagged the award for the song Patang Wali Dor from the film Sirphire, for which Monica Bedi won the best female debutant award.    Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the Pakistani playback singer who so far has sung predominantly for Bollywood films, won the Best Male Playback singer award for the song Akhiyan, from the film Mirza - The Untold Story, which also saw its music directors Jatinder Shah and Honey Singh bag the award for Best Music Director.

Rajiee M Shinde said, "The fact that two singers who have sung mostly for Bollywood films have won the major musical awards for Punjabi Films is a good sign. An infusion of Bollywood talent into Punjabi films will extend their appeal to the other HSMs where Bollywood films are traditionally popular. It will also, gradually, mean a bigger and better reach for the wonderful Punjabi musical talent we have, and will help raise the creative bar for films in both, Hindi and Punjabi."

The show, which began at 6.55 PM after celebrities arrived in a row of limousines, was anchored by superstar Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh and Kapil Sharma, India’s most popular and talented standup comic and actor.

Millions of viewers across the entire distribution footprint of the PTC Network watched the show that top Punjabi GEC PTC Punjabi aired deferred-live (deferred by just 30 minutes).

Highlights of this, the third and the biggest and most spectacular edition of the PTC Punjabi Film Awards yet, included a brilliant live performance by the year’s most successful Bollywood music composer and singer, Himesh Reshammiya, who belted out 20 of his most popular songs in a searing, high-energy 20-minute performance. Many of the 100 dancers who had come for the event from Mumbai, Delhi and Punjab, provided beautiful creative accompaniment to Reshammiya’s high-voltage act. Reshammiya not only went off stage to mix with the audience, he also came back for an encore.

Other popular entertainment acts included Claudia Ciesla’s stylish dance to a medly of extremely popular item numbers including her signature song Balma and other item tracks like  Fevicol, Honey Singh's live Punjabi rap funk performance,  Diljit Dosanjh’s power-packed medley-dance and Monica Bedi's performance to an Old Punjabi Film Songs medley along with Roshan Prince and Geeta Zaildar.

The PTC Network honoured Sunny Deol and Raveena Tandon by presenting them with a very special Golden Temple memento. Its  Director &CEO Rajiee M Shinde and President R Narayan did the honours.

Punjabi films’ superstar Jimmy Shergill, along with Mahi Gill and singer-composer Jazzy B and producer Rahul Mittra used the platform to promote their forthcoming film, Sahib Biwi Aur Gangsterj. Jazzy B performed a song, and the film promos were played out to the 6000-strong audience.
