Snapdeal.com, India’s largest online marketplace, has signed a MOU with North Eastern Handicrafts & Handloom Development Corporation (NEHHDC), a Government of India Enterprise, for online promotion and selling of North Eastern traditional Handicrafts in Guwahati today.

Under the MOU, Snapdeal will create a special store exclusively for Handicrafts from NEHHDC under the brand name of ‘Purbashree’. As part of its ongoing efforts to create a vibrant online marketplace that is inclusive of India’s rich and varied heritage, Snapdeal will also provide NEHHDC complete assistance for online cataloguing of Purbashree products and refining the product offerings online through its data analytics.

The Store will be launched in January 2015 and will offer consumers a unique opportunity to browse through and shop for a wide range of signature products from North Eastern states like wooden artefacts, jute products, trendy jewelry, Assam silk, cane & bamboo products etc as great value buys.

Talking about this initiative, Vishal Chadha, Vice President Market Development, Snapdeal.com, said, “North Eastern states have a rich culture of handicrafts and handlooms that are popular and in demand throughout the country. However, the vast geographic spread of India has resulted in these products being available in key urban centers only. Through this partnership with NEHHDC, we hope to give the highly talented artisans of the North East an access to pan India market thereby assisting the corporation in providing employment and livelihood opportunities to more and more artisans of the region while at the same time providing our 30 million users a chance to appreciate and own fine handicrafts. This is a transformative relationship, one that promises to usher in robust development to the region and at Snapdeal, we are happy to play a key part in government’s vision of a developed Northeast India.”

Commenting on the development, Brig. Umesh Singh Bawa, Managing Director, North Eastern Handicrafts & Handloom Development Corporation, said, “Northeast India is the home of a large number of tribes and sub-tribes. Handlooms and handicrafts form an integral part of the lifestyle of the indigenous people of this region. Purbashree was setup to harness this boundless talent and help artisans with stable livelihood. Therefore a cost effective access to pan India market is critical to the growth of the region. This is why we are excited to get on board Snapdeal.com and leverage the vast potential it offers to our artisans in selling their craft to a national network of buyers beyond just the metros. This is a development that every artisan in the region is looking forward to. We are hopeful of great success through Snapdeal.”

Snapdeal.com has previously launched Rajasthali , the exclusive and only Rajasthan Government emporium, online and Craft Collective, an endeavor by the brand for craftsman across the country to help them sustain their livelihood by providing a platform to popularize and retail their craft.
