The SEIKO 130th Anniversary Collection Launches SEIKO 5 Sports

On the occasion of Seiko’s special 130th Anniversary, the leading watch makers launched the ‘SEIKO 5 Sports Special Edition timepieces in October 2011, price starts at Rs.15, 900/-. SEIKO 5, a legendary mechanical watch was first presented in 1963, but its story starts much earlier. Since making its first watch in 1895, SEIKO has continuously developed its mechanical watchmaking skills and has been at the forefront of the industry with inventions like the Magic Lever* and the day/date window. The first SEIKO 5 model, the SEIKO Sportsmatic 5, targeted young and active people and incorporated a much acclaimed automatic movement with the Magic Lever as well as water resistance and a metal bracelet instead of the more usual leather or nylon strap. Since then, and for about 50 years, SEIKO 5 has achieved legendary status as one of the world’s most trusted timepieces. In particular, the SEIKO 5 Sports series, offering higher specifications, such as a higher degree of water resistance and a Hardlex crystal, has been enormously popular among youth and watch lovers ever since its launch in 1968. The renowned Speed Timer, the world’s first automatic chronograph equipped with both vertical clutch and column wheel, made its debut in the SEIKO 5 Sports series.

The beauty of cherry blossom at night

The design of the new Special Edition SEIKO 5 Sports reflects an aesthetic that is quintessentially Japanese, the blossom of a cherry tree under a springtime moon. The pink gold of the bezel echoes the color of the cherry blossom, while the deep grey of the case and bracelet echoes the soft darkness of the night under moonlight.

All four models are equipped with SEIKO’s latest mechanical caliber: 4R, which has a power reserve of 41 hours and hand winding capability as well as automatic winding. A halt mechanism allows exact synchronization with a time signal. The 4R36 movement has a day and date window and all the models is 10 bar water resistant and have a see-through, screw-down case back.

*Magic Lever: the device that harnesses all the energy created by the rotor as it turns in both directions,

clockwise and counter-clockwise, greatly increasing the power transfer to the mainspring and delivering faster winding speed. It was invented in 1959 and has been continuously developed by SEIKO ever since.
