Whose idea is it anyway? The Netflix-Hotstar face-off

We all love Netflix and Hotstar for the entertainment they provide us, but recently the two competitors provided some amusement of a different kind when they had a face-off on Twitter.

It is nothing new to see huge hoardings cropping up at every corner wishing politicians of all hues on their birthdays, election wins, during various festivals, etc.

Recently, Netflix put up hoardings in Mumbai wishing actor Kevin Spacey on his 57th birthday in typical Indian style, which was designed as a hoarding done for some local political leader. Netflix thought it apt as Spacey is the lead protagonist in the political drama ‘House of Cards’, which is aired on Netflix.

Hotstar was quick to point out on Twitter how similar Netflix’s outdoor campaign was to the one Hotstar had done to promote its show ‘On Air with AIB’ in 2015. “We are flattered,” stated Hotstar’s Twitter message.

Not willing to let things be, Netflix retorted with a Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey’s character in ‘House of Cards’) meme, stating “Insecurity bores me”.

Carrying this Twitter spat further, Hotstar responded with a GIF of its own – using Tyrion Lannister of ‘Game of Thrones’, and the message “And delusion keeps us entertained!”

“Glad someone’s doing the entertaining,” was Netflix’s retort.

Much later, Hotstar responded with “Sure, Pritam can be entertaining too”.

So, plagiarism or a case of ‘multiple discovery’? Or was it much ado about nothing? You decide.

Or as one user Aurindom Mukherjee (‏@AurindomM) put it: “@hotstartweets @NetflixIndia I think we are done here!!”, with a GIF of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) shutting the door.
