ABP Sanjha closes down

In a shocking move, ABP News decided to terminate their Punjabi broadcasting news channel. Ever since they planned to launch their Punjabi news channel ABP Sanjha in early 2013, they’ve been waiting for clearance for about 18 months from the government.

Reportedly, the channel management had cited a virtual blackout of the channel, which covers around 75% of the cable network in Punjab, as the prime reason for closure.

The news broke open to the staff when their Human Resources head gathered the staff office in SAS Nagar and announced pack up. He also announced three months salary for staff to be off, and added that even if they ran the channel on the digital, DTH network, they won’t be able to sustain.

With about 180 plus employees, including 100 odd operations personnel were left jobless.

Under similar circumstances, another private channel, Day and Night News, had had to severely scale down its operations last year.

It was alleged then too that the state government was patronising a certain news channel and protecting its turf by virtually blanking out potential competitors on cable TV.

No comments were received from ABP at the time of filing the report.
