After NDTV, MIB trains its guns on News Time Assam, Careworld TV

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry (MIB) has cracked its whip on two more channels for violating the programming code. Assam-based news channel News Time Assam has been ordered to go off air for 24 hours on November 9, 2016, while a seven-day ban has been imposed on Careworld TV.

This development comes even as the 24-hour ban served on Hindi news channel NDTV India is been strongly opposed by the media fraternity.

The MIB order dated November 2, 2016, states that News Time Assam has violated the programming guidelines multiple times. The channel is accused of revealing the identity of a minor working as a domestic servant who was brutally tortured. The channel was served a showcause notice in October 2013. Meanwhile, News Time Assam has been also accused of showing images of dead bodies.

The Inter Ministerial Committee (IMC) that has been looking into the matter, further stated that News Time Assam had also not complied with an order to air an apology for telecasting a show that appeared to be derogatory towards women.

Meanwhile, Careworld TV has been accused of airing objectionable content and has been ordered to go off air for a week, starting November 9.
