After TRAI notice, BARC releases TV ratings data publicly for Week 13

Following a showcause notice issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for not complying with its direction on release of TV viewership data on its website, BARC India has released TB viewership data for Week 13 (March 23 - 29) of 2019. As reported earlier, TRAI had given BARC India time till April 5, 2019 to explain why action should not be taken against it for contravention of sections of the TRAI Act. 

As is known, BARC India had ceased to make its data available publicly on its website since February 2, 2019. In a statement posted on its website and social media handles, BARC had stated, “In light of implementation of TRAI’s new tariff order and on-ground changes, BARC India’s viewership data will be released only to its subscribers until further notice.” 

The last BARC ratings data publicly available for this year was for Week 5 (January 26 – February 1), when TRAI’s new tariff regime was just kicking in. In Week 5, Zee Anmol was leading the Hindi GECs in Rural+Urban with a gross viewership of 758,674. Zee TV, Star Utsav, Star Bharat and Star Plus brought up the top 5 Hindi GECs in Week 5. 

The GEC ranking scenario has changed quite a bit in Week 13. Leading the Hindi GECs in Rural+Urban is Dangal TV with a gross viewership of 1,160,268. In Week 5, Dangal TV was placed at the 9th spot with a gross viewership of 489,810. 

Big Magic, which had never featured among the top 10 Hindi GECs ever since BARC came into being, is placed a distant No. 2, garnering a gross viewership of 671,341. Star Plus follows in the 3rd spot with a gross viewership of 647,209, while Zee TV is placed in the 4th spot with a gross viewership of 561,253. Placed in the 5th spot is Sony Entertainment Television with a gross viewership of 520,214. 

Colors, Sony SAB, Star Bharat, &TV and Star Utsav are placed in 6, 7, 8, 9 ad 10 positions, respectively. 

Colors has secured a gross viewership of 505,133; Sony SAB has garnered a gross viewership of 403,290; Star Bharat has registered a gross viewership of 306,193; &TV has secured a gross viewership of 165309; and Star Utsav has garnered a gross viewership of 131,127.

Top 5 shows of Week 13 

Mythological shows ruled supreme with ‘Ramayan’ on Dangal TV securing top spot, garnering 12,874 Impressions (000s). Another Dangal TV show, ‘Mahima Shanidev Ki’ was placed 2nd with 12,753 Impressions (000s). The remainder of the Top 5 shows comprised of three shows from the Zee TV stable – ‘Kumkum Bhagya’ with 9,662 Impressions (000s), ‘Kundali Bhagya’ with 9,412 Impressions (000s) and ‘Tujhse Hai Raabta’ with 8,508 Impressions (000s).
