BCCC asks Sony to move ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ to 10 pm slot

Following intense criticism on social media against ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ on Sony Entertainment Television and Union I&B Minister Smriti Irani’s directive to take necessary action against the show, the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) has asked Sony to move ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ from the prime time slot (8.30 pm) to a later slot (10 pm). The channel has also been asked to run a scroll at the bottom of the screen stating that the show doesn’t promote child marriage.

As is known, ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ has been facing flak ever since promos of the show were released because of its controversial content, which shows the budding romance and marriage between a 9-year old boy and an 18-year old girl. Not only that, the boy is shown stalking the girl and applying sindoor on her forehead. The show recently aired episodes where the honeymoon and suhaagraat scenes were shown.

A petition was filed against the show on Change.org, which stated, “A 10-year-old impressionable little kid (‘piyaa’) caresses and stalks a lady who is twice his age and applies sindoor in her maang, which is being telecast at prime time.”

Following the petition, the Union I&B Minister took strong objection regarding the show by writing to the BCCC and asked it to take necessary action against the show.

Meanwhile, the producers of the show recently took  Facebook as a medium to respond to the controversies, where they maintained that they had not received any kind of written note and had added that they would give a proper justification for the show in time and expressed their confidence in their show.

They also insisted that the audiences were misjudging the show without even watching it.
