Consumers can now access, modify channel subscriptions on TRAI app

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has made a second amendment on its existing order prevailing on broadcasters and cable service providers to give consumers the freedom to select the television channels they wanted to watch. This allows consumers to access and modify their subscriptions plans via the TRAI app.

The regulatory authority received several complaints from consumers that they were not able to select TV channels from web portal/ apps of Distribution Platform Operators which it said was against the intention and spirit of the new tariff regime.

Before announcing the order, TRAI said that it consulted all the stakeholders in the ecosystem and found that they were amenable to sharing their APIs with the regulatory authority. The authority is in the process of finalising API specifications which will be communicated separately with the DPOs.
