CSK animated; Cartwheel Creative creates comic series for the IPL team

Catching up on the Indian Premier League Fever and to give the fans a humane treat, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are out in a comic book series specifically targeting the team's young fans. The comics which features Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Michael Hussey etc has been designed and executed by Cartwheel Creative.

The book contains 40 pages, is priced at Rs 40 each and has an initial print run of 40,000 copies. Talking about the comic book series, D Ramakrishna (Ramki), Founder and Executive Director, Cartwheel Creative, tells Adgully, "Chennai Super Komics is intended to be an ongoing series of comics targeted at the younger audience (age group- 8 plus). The comics will feature team CSK in interesting situations that bring out the human side of the players. The comics provide an engaging platform for young readers to be inspired by their heroes."

Elaborating on the client's brief, Ramki adds, "The client wanted us to help grow the brand franchise by finding new avenues to engage with its fan base and to reinforce its position as a brand leader."

Cartwheel Creative has tied up with India Book House for nationwide printing and distribution of the comics. Ramki explains that the comics have been in gestation for almost a year now. "But once we decided to go ahead, it took about 3 to 4 months of planning, developing and executing," he adds.

Talking about the TG and the initial response to the series, Ramki says, "While the comics, in terms of style and content, are targeted at the younger reader ( 8 to 12), they are honestly quite age-indifferent and appeal to the child in all of us. As the parents will actually have to buy it for the kids, they also become part of the audience. While it is still early to assess the market response, the qualitative feedback from all quarters has been nothing short of awesome."

The inaugural edition of the comic series is called "Paandi- Boy of the Match". Its the unlikely story of a small boy's dream of meeting Dhoni coming true, and how he actually helps CSK win a crucial match.Ramki says that the team will evaluate the option of launching the comics in other regional languages after gauging the response to the English edition.

The first issue was written by Aniket Mangrulkar and Rahul Raja and illustrated by Vivid Tamore and Rajnikanth. Surendra Holkar was the Coordinator of the entire project. | By Prabha Hegde [prabha(at)adgully.com]
