Delhi HC quashes Facebook and WhatsApp plea challenging CCI probe

On Thursday, The Delhi High Court dismissed pleas by social media platforms Facebook and WhatsApp, challenging Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) order directing a probe into WhatsApp’s new privacy policy.

The Court found no merit in Facebook and WhatsApp’s petition challenging the order. The CCI contended that it was not examining the alleged violation of individual’s privacy which was being heard by the Supreme Court.

The CCI argued before Court that WhatsApp’s new privacy would lead to excessive data collection which is used for targeted advertising to bring in more users and therefore is an abuse of its dominant position.

Facebook and WhatsApp challenged the CCI order dated March 24.
