Disney+ India paid subscribers equal that of US & Canada subscribers combined

In March 2021, Disney+ experienced a huge transformational growth with 100 million global paid subscribers globally within just 16 months of its launch and as of the end of the June quarter, Disney+’s global paid subscribers stood at 110 million.

However, growth for the OTT platform in the US market is showing a decline for the first time. Disney+ was first launched in the US in November 2019, and today the service is available across 59 countries, including India, Canada, Singapore and Latin America, among others.

Even as the US is witnessing a decline, Disney+ is continuing to see traction in India as well as in Latin America. According to a report in The Information, in the June quarter, India contributed almost 38 million paid subscribers to Disney+’s total paid subscribers of 110 million. According to the report, India now contributes almost as many subscribers as the US and Canada combined, which accounted for close to 38 million subscribers. Disney+ Hotstar in India added 12 million subscribers over the past six months.

On the company website, Bob Chapek, CEO, Walt Disney Company, stated, “The enormous success of Disney+, which has now surpassed 100 million subscribers, has inspired us to be even more ambitious, and to significantly increase our investment in the development of high-quality content. In fact, we set a target of 100+ new titles per year, and this includes Disney Animation, Disney Live Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. Our direct-to-consumer business is the company’s top priority, and our robust pipeline of content will continue to fuel its growth.”
