English movies are the English content markers in Rural India: Chrome Data Report

In the recent study conducted by Chrome Data Analytics & Media on ‘English consumption in rural India’, various findings have been unvield. It clearly indicates that English is the most widely spoken language in the world and it stands out as the most popular and influential on earth. It is being spoken almost all over the world and has gained a prominent place in the minds and hearts of people especially in India. The language has caught up the attention of rural India as well with the penetration of TV and internet in rural regions. With an immediate need to foster English in rural India, TV channels are now playing a major role in mushrooming the language among the rural population. Rural India is also gearing up to the challenge of learning a new language having an aspirational value. The survey conducted by Chrome Data Analytics and Media analyzes the English content consumption among the rural dwellers, preference of language as per programme genres, preferred programme genres in English etc.

The survey was conducted in an age group of 16-44 years among a sample size of 1754. The survey included 19% females and 81% males with 33% of them having a post graduate degree. 

The key findings of the survey are as follows:

- 19% of the respondents claim that they can Read/Write/Speak the English Language

- The survey says, largest of the respondents, 86% consumes English content in form of a movies on TV followed by newspaper and news

- 83% prefer watching English movies in the original language however chooses Hindi in general English entertainment, sports commentary and news

- English movies are the most preferred among other genres

- Star movies, HBO, Movies Now, Sony Pix are among the most famous movie channels among the respondents
