Explore the best of Cape Town through these popular Bollywood movies

Movies have long since acted as a delightful medium to escape the daily humdrum of life. They immerse and draw us in with adrenaline-filled adventures, make us skip a beat with wild suspense, serenade us with captivating tunes, and show us around the world through the eyes of another.

In their own way, movies have also united people: what started off as occasional communal affairs in the country, with neighborhoods gathering together to watch the latest films on makeshift white screens, progressed to being a weekend family activity with the advent of the national channel – Doordarshan. Today, with the growing consumption of OTT platforms and affordable data packs, movies are largely a personal affair.

With the lockdown and restrictions imposed due to the global pandemic, movies have become a crucial source of entertainment, and a welcome escape from the monotony. They also offer a glimmer of hope by serving as a reminder that normalcy will be restored, and the world will travel once again.

Read on for some of the best movies that inspire wanderlust, make you dream bigger and chase real-life travel experiences. All these movies are based in our favourite city – Cape Town! Rightly known as the Mother City, Cape Town is as diverse as it is enchanting. It is where travellers can feel perfectly in tune with the pulse of new South Africa.

 Cocktail

Bollywood blockbuster Cocktail, starring Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty, was extensively shot in the Cape Town. The popular song ‘Tum Hi Ho Bandhu’ was shot at Maiden’s Cove in the Camps Bay Area. This gorgeous, scenic lookout spot lies between two beaches and has great views of the sea and mountains. Ideal for some relaxing down time, Maiden’s Cove has a tidal pool for swimming and big boulders to lounge around on.

The perfect weather in Cape Town at the time of the shoot also allowed Table Mountain, the Twelve Apostles, and V&A Waterfront to be featured in the filming.

 Aashiqui 2

Camps Bay Beach, a blue flag beach since 2008, seems to be a popular shooting spot – owing to the unique scenic ocean vistas offered. Film-makers are able to capture the deep blue, clear ocean between Lions Head and Table Mountain, and also get beautiful golden light during certain times of the day at this white sand beach. Aashiqui 2’s chart-topping song, ‘Hum Mar Jayenge’ was shot entirely in the Camps Bay Area.

 Ghajini

The ultimate beach destination – Muizenberg, is known for its multi-coloured Victorian-styled bathing boxes that add bold hues to the already vivid landscape. It is also a Blue Flag Beach, which means that it gets full marks for safety, recreational facilities, and eco-consciousness. Aamir Khan shook a leg to the song ‘Behka’ for his movie Ghajini (2008) on this iconic beach.

 Sanju:

The song ‘Kar Har Maidaan Fateh’ from the 2018 movie Sanju, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, was entirely shot at Boulder’s Beach and the majestic Table Mountain in Cape Town. Table Mountain is one of the most popular attractions of Cape Town. This 7th Natural Wonder of the World offers a spectacular view of the Mother City with its bustling city life and the blue ocean.

The song even features Ranbir Kapoor hiking up the magnificent mountain, in a moment of victory.
