FB launches 'News' feed in UK; publishers get their due

UK media outlets expected to make millions of pounds every year by licensing their their content to Facebook. The social media network has launched Facebook News in the UK, a dedicated space for national and local news, coming in January 2021.

Most British newspaper groups including The Guardian, The Daily Mirror, The Independent, all the UK’s major regional publishers and magazines such as The Economist have signed up to the program on launch, under which their articles will appear in a dedicated news section on the platform.

While most Facebook news consumption is currently via links shared on the user’s main newsfeed, the main dedicated news tab will involve contractors paid by the social network selecting what they consider to be the main stories of the day from mainstream media outlets.

The Facebook News section will feature a set of top stories chosen by the news aggregator service Upday, alongside other stories chosen algorithmically to reflect a user’s interests.
