Feature | MNP has arrived, a jittery start though!

The Indian Government flagged off the much-awaited and highly anticipated Mobile Number Portability on the 20th of January 2011. The facility will allow customers to choose a new telephone operator with the benefit of not having to lose their current number.

The new facility has created a buzz in the teleco market as for the customer it means freedom to choose a network with better service and for service providers it means a chance to win over newer customers. It might also compel service providers to look at improving their offerings and network to retain their post-paid customers.

The tariff cut war before this was something that most of the pre-paid customers benefitted from while there were hardly any new offerings being rolled out for post-paid customers. Now with the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) here the service providers have a lot of planning to do not only to get newer customers but retain their own customers.

So Adgully caught up with the service-providers to understand their gameplan with MNP.

It will be interesting to see a few months down the line if the current game plan helps smaller service providers to benefit from MNP and if the top names across larger service providers change positions. | By Prabha Hegde [prabha(at)adgully.com]
