Game-changing homegrown brands to watch out for in 2023

Authored by Able Joseph, Founder and CEO, Aisle.

Homegrown brands in India have been making large strides forward in the Indian market over the last few years. These brands are progressively being viewed as a source for much higher quality products than global brands in the same category. They are actively aiding an evolution of ideas, changing the standard and encouraging India’s culturally-driven marketplaces to flourish. In addition, the market has begun to favour Indian brands as they have a far better understanding of the indigenous audience, enabling them to tailor their products to the realistic needs and wants of the people. There are plenty of promising brands out there who’re building pride around the Make in India tag, but here are some of my favourite picks.

Ather - A game-changing experience

The automobile industry is amid a huge technological disruption – intelligent vehicles may soon revolutionize our future commute experience. Ather is one to watch out for in this segment. The brand’s journey has been truly remarkable since it first set up shop in Bangalore. Ather is one of the few Indian brands that has dared to disrupt the market in the vehicle segment. Their aim to build a better user experience, over just value-engineering, is a simple yet effective strategy that I greatly admire. Their products are futuristic and constantly improving. It will be exciting to see what they have in store for 2023.

Mokobara -  Travel the desi way

A redesign of the way we see luggage has been long overdue. Based out of Bangalore, Mokobara is on a mission to make people travel in style and with ease. Mokobara is one of my go-to brands when it comes to travel accessories. Their chic products, unique features, and brand communication – which highlight movement and ambition, set them apart in the lifestyle accessory segment. Mokobara’s products have a unique desi-take, effectively combining broader ideas with the local needs of an average Indian user.

Bewakoof -  Stupid is the new Smart

Founded in 2012, this disruptive desi clothing brand makes fashion much more fun. Bewakoof's cheeky design and comic-style clothing are an interesting take on what is sometimes an over-saturated ‘minimal’ and typically ‘chic’ clothing market. I also really enjoy the humorous-desi element in their designs.

Epigamia - Food and Innovation

Epigamia prides itself on being an innovative, consumer-first and honest homegrown brand. Being a game changer in the food industry, the taste and quality of Epigama products are unbeatable. Their wide range of options, such as lactose-free ‘Misti Doi’ and new ghee-based spreads, are among my top choices from the brand. On the business side, Epigamia has carved a commendable niche for itself over time and has stirred up quite an interest in the health-food segment.

Leon's Burgers & Wings - A team recommendation

The luscious food adventure of Leon’s began with a passion for food. Leon’s Burgers & Wings, founded in 2015, represents an inspiring picture of what can be accomplished when friends work together. Since then, their food has only gotten better. Leon’s menu pans American and Turkish flavours with a desi twist and, frankly, gives other fast-food chains in Bangalore a run for their money. Their Tandoori Chicken Burger and wings are among my favourite items on the menu. Unsurprisingly, Leon is also a popular choice for team lunch orders at our headquarters.

One thing is for sure: homegrown brands will continue to grow in importance in the coming years, and we need to make it a point to support them. I, for one, am excited to make new additions to this list in the coming year!
