Government wants to hold implementation of WhatsApp's privacy policy

On Monday, the government told Delhi High Court that WhatsApp’s privacy policy does not conform to IT rules. The messaging platform has been asked to clarify its position on the policy which came to effect on May 15.

The petition being heard in the HC against WhatsApp’s policy sought Facebook and WhatsApp’s stand on the claim that their new policy violates user’s right to privacy under the Constitution.  The government said that it has written to Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg on the issue and a reply is awaited. Therefore, there is a need to maintain status quo with regards to implementation of the policy, it stated.

The next hearing will be held on June 3. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is also investigating the policy on the grounds that it is anti-competitive.
