Govt asks Google to stop showing ads of betting firms

The Indian government is reportedly asking Google to cease showing surrogate ads for offshore betting operators in its search results over two months after urging online platforms to avoid promoting them.
According to a media report, the ministry of information and broadcasting has written to the search engine giant regarding this.
The report states that the authorities have noticed that though ads of these companies have stopped appearing on TV channels and OTT platforms after they issued an advisory on the matter on October 3, they are still running on YouTube and Google.
The government on October 3 requested TV, print, and digital media platforms to refrain from advertising online and social betting platforms.
Also, online advertisement intermediaries were advised not to target such advertisements targeting Indians.
