GroupM names John Halpin as the new CEO of New Zealand

WPP's GroupM network of media agencies has chosen John Halpin to be the new CEO of its New Zealand branch. He will be taking over from Chris Riley, who had been in the role since 2019.

Halpin is a person from New Zealand who has more than 20 years of experience in media and marketing. He has worked with well-known brands like Coca-Cola, Commonwealth Bank, Telstra, Google, IBM, and Microsoft in different parts of the world. In his most recent role at Apparent, he started and expanded the media division, working with global and local technology brands. He has also held positions at Australian companies like Naked Communications and Ikon, where he was involved in managing and leading strategy.

I'm really happy that I'll be working in New Zealand again," says Halpin. "The agencies there have a lot of talented people and a wide range of skills. I'll get to work with some of the most famous brands in New Zealand and the world. This is exactly the challenge I've been looking for because they have a strong vision for the future."

Halpin has been appointed to work closely with the leaders of EssenceMediacom, Wavemaker, Mindshare, and GroupM in New Zealand. Their goal is to provide clients with products and services that make use of technology, tools, and products from the global network. Halpin will report directly to Aimee Buchanan, the CEO of GroupM AUNZ.

Earlier this month, GroupM made changes to its management structure in the Asia-Pacific region. They dissolved the management at the APAC level, which means that the Australia and New Zealand (AUNZ) operations now report directly to the global leadership of GroupM. Within AUNZ, GroupM has also been appointing new leaders for its different divisions. Pippa Berlocher has become the CEO of EssenceMediacom AUNZ, Maria Grivas is now the CEO of Mindshare AUNZ, Melissa Hey has taken on the role of GroupM Chief Investment Officer, and Tom Braybrook is the Managing Director of the data and tech consultancy called Acceleration
