Hindi News genre records highest viewership growth in 2019

Hindi News genre saw the highest growth in 2019 in terms of viewership, as compared to 2018, with the Hindi News Group registering a growth of 26 per cent at 48,543,737 gross viewership in CY2019, as against 38,390,863 gross viewership in CY2018 (Source: BARC, HSM,15+,Impression in 000s ,W1-W52’18 & W1-W52’19). 

Sports genre followed with a growth of 22 per cent, garnering a gross viewership of 32,514,223 in CY2019, compared to gross viewership of 26,743,968 (Source: BARC, HSM,15+,Impression in 000s ,W1-W52’18 & W1-W52’19). 

In comparison, Hindi GECs, Hindi Movies and Hindi Music genres saw de-growth in their viewership during CY2019. Hindi GECs recorded de-growth of -23 per cent, with its gross viewership down to 192,543,611 in CY2019 from 251,324,273 in CY2018. 

The gross viewership of Hindi Movies genre, too, was down at 159,426,436 in CY2019, from 201,270,485 in CY2018. Meanwhile, the Hindi Music genre was down -9 per cent – from a gross viewership of 37,125,072 in CY2018 to 33,935,202 in CY2018 (Source: BARC, HSM,15+,Impression in 000s ,W1-W52’18 & W1-W52’19). 

In 2019, among national channels, AajTak, Star Sports 1 Hindi, Sony Max were able to maintain their leadership, even though Sony Max saw de-growth in its viewership. Star Plus topped the Hindi GECs genre, while B4U Music led the Hindi Music genre in 2019. 

Hindi News Genre – A year of innovative content 

This is the 19th consecutive year that AajTak has maintained its leadership position in the Hindi News space. AajTak is the only national channel that maintained its leadership during the 52 weeks. The channel led the Hindi News genre with a gross viewership of 7,983,571 in CY2019, compared to 6,511,384 in CY2018 – a growth of 23 per cent (Source: BARC, HSM,15+,Impression in 000s ,W1-W52’18 & W1-W52’19). 

Being the year of the General Elections as well as quite a few State Assembly Elections, the year 2019 saw all news channels come up with programmes centred around these big events. 

AajTak has followed the strategy of ‘Innovate First’ since its inception, and came up with several innovations during the year which were show stoppers. Some of these innovations included:

India TV registered the highest growth in viewership in CY2019 at 27 per cent – from a gross viewership of 4,805,735 in CY2018 to 6,087,916 in CY2019. The channel was placed second in terms of viewership in 2019. 

ABP News followed in the third spot, registering a 21 per cent growth in viewership at 5,773,070 in CY2019, as against 4,764,924 in CY2018. News18 India was placed fourth with a gross viewership of 5,679,882 in CY2019, compared to 4,782,263 in CY2018 – a growth of 19 per cent. Placed in the fifth position was Zee News, which recorded a growth of 12 per cent – from 4,959,906 in CY2018 to 5,579,017 in CY2019 (Source: BARC, HSM,15+,Impression in 000s ,W1-W52’18 & W1-W52’19).
