HISTORY TV18 Brings Back the Highly Acclaimed Miniseries of the 80's 'TAMAS'

On the occasion of Independence Day, HISTORY TV18 brings to its viewers the iconic depiction of India’s partition – TAMAS. Based on the Hindi novel of the same name written by Bhisham Sahni, the series, directed by Govind Nihalani was regarded a controversial work for the realistic and daring portrayal of the India–Pakistan partition.  The show is a part of HISTORY TV18’s continuous efforts of pushing the envelope on high quality content. This 8 part series will be aired daily starting 15th Aug at 9:00 pm.

Considered as one of the most inspired creations of the ace film-maker Govind Nihalani, Tamas narrates the exodus of a Sikh and Hindu family to India, in the backdrop of riot-stricken Pakistan during the partition. While the show was widely admired and received critical acclaim, the series faced ire from some quarters, for its bitter portrayal of political opportunism in the face of enormous tragedy. The miniseries boasts of a legendary star-cast befitting an epic, with actors like Om Puri, Deepa Sahi, Amrish Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Bhisham Sahni, A.K. Hangal, Dina Pathak, Saeed Jaffrey and Surekha Sikri among others who brought alive the characters through their sensitive and realistic portrayal.

Speaking on the occasion, Ritu Kapur, Head Programming, A+E Networks | TV18, stated, “HISTORY TV18 successfully created a special place for itself in the minds of the Indian audience with its edgy, lively, fast-paced and varied mix of programming content.  Tamas is a definitive work on the partition by the masters – Bhisham Sahni and Govind Nihalani.  We are bringing that critical aspect of Indian History to a whole new generation through this drama.”
