Review

Disney+ Hotstar’s new web series, ‘Hostages 2’ is a continuation from Part 1 of the series, which was released in the year 2019. Based on the Israeli series of the same name, quite a few characters from ‘Hostages 1’ feature in Season 2. Make a return is retired SP Prithvi Singh (Ronit Bose Roy), along with his gang. While Season 1 saw Dr Mira Anand (Tisca Chopra) and her family as the hostages, Season 2 sees another strong female character – Ayesha Khan (Divya Dutta) in the role of a tough hostage negotiator.

The story in ‘Hostages 2’ begins one week after the events in Season 1 end. This time, Prithvi and his gang take Haryana Chief Minister Handa (Dalip Tahil) to an old bungalow on the Delhi-Gurgaon highway, and the motive is personal. Prithvi requires Handa’s bone marrow to save his wife’s life.

There are several twists and turns and characters thrown into the plot mix, which are both enthralling and confusing. A lot more back stories of the characters are narrated, some quite unnecessarily. Also entering the mix is pretty boy of Bollywood, Dino Morea, in the role of a sneering bad man.

There are certain portions that will remind one of the Spanish series ‘Money Heist’, especially the way the entire scene is depicted, the style of negotiation and the way one person from the hostage gets involved with the police.

Apart from the hostages part, there are other stories too which go parallel to this scene, that I felt was a little unwanted and had no reason to be added in between and extend the duration of the show, like the one involving the Bangladesh Prime Minister scene.

Season actors Ronit Bose Roy and Divya Dutta stand out, especially the latter.

Overall, ‘Hostages 2’ is a good watch, but one that has been stretched unnecessarily and also predictable in parts. One expected a more taut crime thriller. Will there is a Season 3? It’s a wait and watch.
