How Kapil Sharma and Super Dancer are giving a boost to Sony

BARC ratings for Week 37 (September 10-19) [HSM (U+R) : NCCS All : 4+ Individuals] did not have many surprises except for Sony Entertainment Television climbing up to No. 6 after being placed in the bottom three for weeks. The channel, which was placed in the eighth spot in Week 36, gained momentum and saw a 21 per cent jump in its ratings between Weeks 31 and 37.

Sony Entertainment Television’s performance over last 7 weeks

As for Sony’s performance in Hindi GEC – Urban, the channel climbed up from No. 6 to No. 4 in Week 37, thus garnering impressions of 301 million, which is an increase of approximately 13.5 per cent from Week 36 (265 million) viewership numbers.

The rise of SET

The rise in ratings can be largely attributed to the popularity of two of Sony’s weekend shows – ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ and dance reality show ‘Super Dancer’. ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ was placed at No. 4 in Hindi GEC – Urban (No. 6 in Week 36), while in HSM (U+R) the show was the fifth most watched among the Hindi GECs in Week 37 (No. 7 in Week 36).

‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ performance over the last few weeks

The above numbers indicate that ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ ratings have been volatile as the show witnessed drop in its viewership numbers in Weeks 34 and 35, before picking up again in Week 36.

As for ‘Super Dancer’, airing on Saturdays and Sundays at 8 pm, the dance reality show garnered 5.1 million weekly impressions in Hindi GEC – Urban, to be placed at the ninth spot. In the HSM market, the show, which features Shilpa Shetty, Geeta Kapoor and Anurag Basu on the judges’ panel, garnered around 8.1 million impressions.

The way ahead for Sony

The channel has been witnessing steady rise in its ratings in Hindi Speaking Market. Also, with new shows lined up in reality as well as fiction segments (‘Indian Idol’ and ‘Beyhadh’ are awaited), it will be interesting to see how Sony progresses over the next few weeks in the Hindi GEC space.
