INR 180 crore discount sought by Star India

On January 9, 2023, an Apex Council meeting was held by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, in order to talk over the value of Star Sports rights. Ed-tech platform BYJU’s appeal  to exit from becoming a sponsor of the Indian team’s jersey,  was the key point of discussion of the meeting. According to the media reports, at the moment when the final decisions on both these issues are postponed till further notice, the board may come into an agreement with the two stakeholders.

The star deal is worth more than INR 180 crores in the fee structure of international games, with BCCI and Star contradicting over the appropriateness of the original Media Rights Agreement (MRA). In addition it is about a delayed series against South Africa where the BCCI is wanting the implementation of the current rate with Star insisting on the old rates to be applied.

According to the five year MRA which was signed in the year 2018,  the all inclusive worth of an international game was around INR 60 crore per match on an average, however in the fine print, Star was necessitated to pay INR 46 crore per game in the first year, INR 47 crore in the second year, INR 46.5 crore in the third year, INR 77.4 crore in the fourth year, and INR 78.9 crore in the fifth and final year.
