Interpret Youth career conversations with MTVplay

Have you ever been in a situation where you had to choose between someone else's and your own happiness? The youth today are constantly facing such dilemmas. A detailed understanding of the youth values reveals that 91% of youth consider family their first priority. At MTV, when we spoke to youth across India, 87% of youth declared that family values are important to them. Click here for more information on Youth values by gender. So what are the youth supposed to do when they are pressurized by family members to enter fields, either education or career or both, that they aren't interested in? Also, remember, the youth today is fiercely independent and craves to make it to the big league.

The youth chant in chorus that they would do anything to make their parents proud as their parents have given them everything they needed while growing up. 85% of youth surveyed by MTV across 13 cities, agree that parents are the biggest influencers when it comes to picking their careers. A youngster said¦ "What makes you even happier is when you have a job that you love and at the same time your parents are proud of you."

Indian youth feel that even though they may wish to pursue their individual passions as careers, many a times they do lack unquestionable support from parents. Majority of Youth in India still hesitate to pursue their passions as their careers, though the trend shows winds of change. So, how do they negotiate the life between profession and passion? Many first jobbers maintain a strict distinction between their day job and the after-life, where they pursue their passion. Money earned from steady jobs ensures fast bucks. This is then used to fund individual hobbies during weekends and holidays. So, they have dual careers: 1 for the world and 1 for themselves!

That said, quite a few youth stated that as long as they were earning enough, it didn't matter whether or not they had job satisfaction at early years of their career. Money was the reason they woke up each morning, put on their corporate attire and marched off to work. It is one of the top 2 things they look for in a job, said a whopping 66%. Only 14% ranked "passion' in the "5 most important things' they would look for in a job. Even convenient work timings ranked higher than "passion'. 31% youth say convenient work timing is one of the "top 5 things' they would seek in a job.
