IPL media values surpass EPL rights

The Indian Premier Game (IPL) has surpassed the English Premier League (EPL) in terms of per match worth after day one of the e-auction of IPL’s media rights saw the profitable league earn a never-before-seen valuation on Sunday, according to media sources.

Sourav Ganguly, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), released a statement saying that the IPL yields more revenue than the EPL. According to the latest figures obtained by IPL’s per match valuation, the lucrative league’s ongoing media rights auction has certainly surpassed the popular football league.

Not only that, but the IPL currently only lags the NFL in terms of per-match valuation, with the NFL continuing to set the benchmark with its matching number of $17 million (Rs 133 crore per match).

With the overblown figures that the IPL’s bidding reached on day one, day two (Monday) is projected to be along the same lines. Aside from packages A and B, which are television and digital groups for the Indian broadcast region, respectively, there are two additional packages in the running: package C, which contains 18 non-exclusive special matches (base price of Rs 11 crores), and package D, which is rest of the world rights (base price of Rs 3 crores).
Said Karan Taurani of Elara Capital: “We believe per match cost basis, the digital segment will come at par with Tv at best and don’t see it moving beyond TV, as TV still has a lot of large FMCG advertisers and digital despite strong growth has concerns on monetisation and SVOD, as india is a price sensitive market with tepid ARPU’s. We expect the other two bundles (overseas and cluster) too command a premium of almost 40-45% over the base price , which means the total value of rights will breach INR 50000 in line with our expectation,” he said.
