IRS 2017: Dainik Jagran leads Hindi dailies; TOI tops English dailies

After a gap of around four years, the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) has returned. The Readership Studies Council of India (RSCI), formed jointly by the Media Research Users Council (MRUC), and the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC), has revealed the data for IRS 2017 today.

As per IRS 2017 data, dailies added 11 crore readers in the last three years. Among Hindi dailies, Dainik Jagran lead the readership numbers, garnering a total readership (last 1 month read) of 70,377,000. Hindustan follows with a total readership of 52,397,000.

Among English dailies, The Times of India tops the list with a total readership of 13,047,000, followed by Hindustan Times with 6,847,000.

Tamil daily, Daily Thanthi, is the most read among regional newspapers with a total readership of 23,159,000. Marathi daily Lokmat follows with a total readership of 18,066,000.

The IRS 2017 is a full year report covering four quarters of fieldwork. Data validation for all the four fieldwork quarters for IRS 2017 was successfully completed in December 2017. The IRS 2017 Report records the highest ever sample size of around 3.2 lakh individuals across the length and breadth of India, which is a 34 per cent increase over the 2013-14 IRS report. The field force model was revamped for IRS 2017.

Apart from being the currency for print planning, IRS is the most authentic and widely used source of media and consumer insights for advertisers, publishers, agencies, and broadcasters.
