ITC issues statement after #BoycottBingo gains steam on Twitter

Users on Twitter have galvanized to express their outrage on yet another brand. This time their target is Bingo! by ITC Foods. The brand came under fire for its recently released campaign featuring Ranveer Singh.

The film depicts Ranveer Singh at a party being plagued by guests who ask him ‘Aage Kya Plan Hai’ since he recently graduated from college. To escape this tired line of questioning, or what’s referred to as the ‘old angle’, Singh adopted a ‘mad angle’ to fend off the guests. Watch the film below.

Twitterati insinuated that the film mocks late actor Sushant Singh Rajput by its pseudo-intellectual use of science terms like photons, algorithm and paradox because apparently the late actor was fond of science related topics and often spoke about them via his social media handles.

Soon #BoycottBingo started trending where users demanded that ITC Foods pull the ad and remove Ranveer Singh as their brand ambassador. A statement has been issued by ITC Foods.

“A completely false, erroneous and mischievous message is being posted/circulated alleging that an advertisement of Bingo! is making fun of a late Bollywood celebrity.

Such kind of erroneous messages are knowingly spreading falsehoods. We request you to not fall prey to such mischievous posts.

The recent Bingo! Advertisement was shot more than a year ago in October 2019. It is being aired this year because of delay in the launch of Bingo! Mad Angles Cheese Nachos and Bingo! Mad Angles Pizza due to the Covid-19 pandemic”.
