Jay Oza reveals how he impressed Zoya Akhtar while filming Gully Boy

Gully Boy is amongst the most successful films in recent years, with standout performances from the cast & crew. While performances from the cast were widely praised, another notable aspect of this movie that stood out was its direction and cinematography. Jay Oza who has worked across esteem projects such as Made In HeavenToofan, amongst others is the cinematographer of Gully Boy. He recently spoke to IMDb in an exclusive interaction about filming an impactful scene from the film and how he earned Zoya Akhtar’s praise for his insights.

Speaking of filming the car sequence scene in Gully Boy, Jay Oza said, “This was the day when we were shooting Murad's (Ranveer Singh’s character’s name in the movie) sequence inside the car where he is waiting on New Year’s Eve. This scene was exceptional. Zoya was very clear about how she had visualised and picturised. So, the idea of having a carpet of lights over the parking lot, Ranveer’s car parked under it, and him sitting alone in that parking lot under this blanket of lights was completely Zoya’s idea. This picture was taken while we were completely ready. And we, me and Zoya, had decided to take a shot of the frontal tracking into Murad’s waiting into the car. And this picture was taken while we were waiting for Murad to get ready and come on set. While we were waiting, I was just moving around the car, and I suddenly felt that maybe we should add an opening shot of moving into the car’s rear-view mirror with the focus shifting from the bokehness, slowly into the mirror finding Murad, which was not earlier the plan to take the shot. But while we were waiting, I thought this would look nice and would be a great opening to this scene compared to street landing onto a wide shot of a car parked. While we were waiting for Murad (Ranveer) to come on set, we kind of quickly put a track and set that shot up for Zoya to see and on seeing it, she really liked it. And yeah, that was the scene's opening, and this is the exact moment (does not remember clearly) probably just before or after we got that idea.”
