LFW Summer/Resort 2013: Manish Malhotra celebrates 100 years of cinema

Celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema, Bollywood’s ace couturier Manish Malhotra, just created a buzz at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2013 with his line-up of top directors and stars from the Indian silver screen.

The stage was set with large posters of Indian films as a backdrop and the lilting tunes of the nostalgic decades. The show opened with a memorable audio visual featuring the legendary film makers of the Indian screen and hit music from blockbuster movies.

Creating a fashionable stir on the catwalk were the very stylish directors, Karan Johar in a black embroidered kurta, Dibakar Banerjee in a stylish Jodhpuri jacket, Zoya Akhtar in a lovely black Kashmiri embroidered kurta and Anurag Kashyap in a regal sherwani as they modelled the fabulous creations by Manish to open the stylish event.

It was a nostalgic trip down memory lane for the audience as Manish recreated the fashion trends of the different eras of Bollywood style from 1913 to 2013 by giving each look his exclusive touch.

The designer opened with black and white from the pioneering 30s with men’s and women’s wear, featuring the embroidered saris with ornate borders, ghararas, kurtis, gathered kurtas and lehengas. Men’s wear was sober with loose pyjamas, kurtas, Nehru jackets and sherwanis in sombre black and white.

For the ‘60s it was the form fitted kurtas with salwars or churidars in glitzy fabrics and textures.  Manish added stunning bell bottoms polka dotted cholis, long embroidered maxis and hipster saris with stunning borders for the 70s - an era when chiffon and nylon ruled the fashion charts.

The colourful flower power of the 80s had a marked hippie touch with lots of colours and maxis with embroidery.

When it came to the 90s, Manish made his entry onto the Bollywood fashion scene. The designer showed his trade mark pastels and chiffons for the silver screen when sheer skirts and chikan kurtas were a rage.

To create a spectacular end Manish brought in two handsome showstoppers – the dashing Varun Dhawan in a turquoise silk jacket with a kurta shirt and Siddharth Malhotra in a candy pink mandarin collar coat who confidently strutted down the ramp. Ending the show was the beautiful Priyanka Chopra in a pop green net and chiffon sari with a red border that had the renowned Manish Malhotra touch.

The fabric choice of chiffons, georgettes, silk and net with gorgeous prints of abstracts, florals along with sequins and Kashmiri embroidery reflected the glamour of those days.

The best was yet to come when Priyanka Chopra spoke about the glory of Indian cinema and invited India’s first Oscar Winner Bhanu Athaiya, Dream Girl Hema Malini in a fuchsia Manish Malhotra sari and India’s nightingale Asha Bhosle on the ramp. Ashatai also wearing a Manish sari, in her inimitable humorous manner confessed her long pending desire to model and brought the house down when she walked the ramp to a thunderous standing ovation from the packed hall.

An impromptu ramp walk by Karisma Kapur and Kajol for their favourite designer Manish was a fitting tribute.
It was a show full of high octane glitz and glamour as well as Bollywood dazzle for the audience, who was taken on a nostalgic journey through a century of Bollywood fashion history seen through the eyes of Manish Malhotra, the silver screen’s favourite designer.
