LinkedIn’s ‘Bring In Your Parents Day’ is back

LinkedIn, the world’s largest online professional network on the Internet, today announced the return of its Bring In Your Parents Day (BIYP) initiative. As per the new global study released by LinkedIn, 43% Indian parents would like to do their child’s job, but only 26% think they would perform well at it.  With Bring In Your Parents Day, LinkedIn gives parents an opportunity to understand their child’s job role and bridge the generational gap between the parent and child in the world of work.

LinkedIn started the global initiative four years ago, after research showed that more than one in three parents have no idea what their children do at work. Since then tens of thousands of parents from hundreds of companies around the world have joined LinkedIn to celebrate  Bring In Your Parents Day.

As per a global survey conducted by LinkedIn this year, while parents have a positive influence on their child’s professional journey, they are not confident to describe many of the popular jobs. The list of misunderstood jobs by Indian parents includes Actuary (74%), UI Designer (73.5%), Firefighter (64%), Radio Producer (62.5%) and Data Scientist (59%), among others.

Here are some key findings from the India survey:

From education to first job, Indian parents strongly influence their child's life choices: The survey revealed that 58% Indian parents have influenced their child’s decision on taking the first professional job. It further indicated that 63% Indian parents have shaped their child’s career choices as compared to only 38% globally.

Indian Parents are proud of their child’s professional success: Seventy-four percent (74%) Indian parents are very proud of their child and 43% believe their children will be more successful than they have been in their career. Forty-Five percent (45%) parents believe that their child’s workplace gives them an opportunity to learn more skills. With respect to women professionals, India ranked highest when compared to other countries surveyed globally with 77% believing that their daughters have more opportunity to progress in their careers than they did.

Indian Parents are one of the best untapped brand advocates: As per the survey, 75% Indian parents stated that they are likely to brag about their child’s professional achievements with others. Half of all Indian parents were most proud when their children secured their first job and 44% felt proud when their children got promoted.

“It’s very clear that parents are proud of their child at work, yet they don’t understand the specifics of their professional world,” says Pat Wadors, SVP of Global Talent, LinkedIn. “We are thrilled to be able to inspire hundreds of companies worldwide to help connect parents to their children’s professional lives just by opening up our workplace for a day.”

LinkedIn Bring In Your Parents Day is being held on Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, in 15 countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, India, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Singapore, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and the United States. Businesses and individuals worldwide are encouraged to take part in the day. You can find out more about the day at biyp.linkedin.com or join conversations on Twitter with #LinkedIn #BIYP.
