Mahindra to kick-start Blues Festival this weekend!

The Mahindra Group announced the roll-out of the first Mahindra Blues Festival. The festival, a first in India, has brought international Blues superstars like Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Shemekia Copeland, Matt Schofield to Mumbai. The festival will also feature home grown talent like Soulmate from Shillong, Saturday Night Blues band from Kolkata and The Luke Kenny Mojo Jukebox from Mumbai, amongst others.

The two-day weekend festival will roll out at the Mehboob Studio, Mumbai on February 5 & 6, 2011. The Mahindra Blues Festival has been well positioned as an international festival.

Speaking at the press conference, Rajeev Dubey, President (Group HR & Corporate Services) & Member of the Group Management Board, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said, "The Mahindra commitment to nurturing the performing arts in India, as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, is well known. With our presence in global markets, we now have an opportunity to support performing arts in other geographies and create a confluence of cultures. Our tractors sell in large numbers in the Southern part of the US, especially the Mississippi delta ' the birthplace of the Blues. Transplanting and exchanging cultural themes enables a better understanding amongst world communities. The Mahindra Blues Festival is a step in that direction as it connects communities in the US with the people of Mumbai."

The iconic and retro Mehboob studio, where the festival will play out this weekend, has been designed specifically to create a Blues-like atmosphere, with three separate stages for multiple concerts and sessions with the artistes.

This will be one of the biggest music events in Mumbai. The Mahindra Blues Festival will promote music not just with international stars, but will also use it as a platform to display Indian talent in the Blues. The festival website has been inundated with bands and artists writing in on how they are inspired by the festival.

"Blues became the vocabulary of people who did not get their lives on a silver platter, those who were disenfranchised, those who had to endure strife and suffering. This struggle resonates with the people of Mumbai. When Mahindra was deciding on a city for the festival, it was obvious that the Blues belonged to Mumbai," added Rajeev Dubey.

Buddy Guy, a five-time Grammy winner, is the definitive Blues artiste and has been a key influence on popular Rock and Blues artistes like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Speaking on the occasion, he said, "Some people here think the Blues are about melancholy and are sad. When I'm finished you are not going to think that anymore."
