Making India a global content powerhouse – how to tap the audience?

Content has not just been king, but also a lifesaver for people confined to their homes amid the pandemic and nation-wide lockdown. All industry reports showcase how content consumption has gone up during these times – content that spans regional as well as global space.

With several Indian broadcasters tying up with distribution networks across countries, Indian content has been engaging with the Indian Diaspora for several years now. With the growing spread of digital, today there are no geographical boundaries for content to travel to viewers’ homes and personal devices. OTT has emerged as a great leveller of content availability.

Indian audiences have been lapping up global content in these times – be it Korean, Spanish, Latin American and more. However, Indian content is yet to establish a firm base among the global audiences. Films like ‘Lagaan’, ‘Dangal’ in recent times have been appreciated across the world, for instance, ‘Dangal’ found a sizeable audience base in China. Decades earlier, Raj Kapoor was a phenomenon in erstwhile USSR, Mithun Chakraborty has also found much love among Russians, Rajinikanth has a huge fan base in Japan.

Indian films have been appreciated at the Cannes Films Festival. The International Film Festival of India has also been providing a market place for Indian content to global buyers.

Yet, the sizeable Indian cinema output remains devoid of a truely global audience. How to make Indian content travel around the world? How to create universal stories from India? What are the strategies required to create and distribute content to go global? What could be the game changer for Indian content? These and many other questions will be taken up for discussions at an exclusive webinar on ‘Making India a Global Content Powerhouse’. The elite panel will comprise industry experts such as:

  • Pradeep Dwivedi, CEO - India, Eros International Media Ltd (Moderator)
  • Anindo Banerjee, Head of Originals, Hoichoi
