Malayalam audio streaming platform Aarpoy launched

A collective of filmmakers from Kerala, Collective Phase One, has launched Aarpoy, an audio-on-demand streaming platform for Malayalam content. Noted Malayalam writer MT Vasudevan Nair launched the platform on Wednesday (November 24, 2021). Collective Phase One is the brainchild of filmmakers, who are part of the new wave of Malayalam cinema, whose body of work include critically acclaimed films like ‘Annayum Rasoolum’, ‘Eeda’, etc.

Unlike live radio programmes that cannot be stored, Aarpoy’s content can be listened to, downloaded, stored and shared with others, at any time.

Aarpoy promises a variety of content, transcending genres, such as entertainment, literature, fiction, detective fiction, music, drama, science, etc. The audio platform offers a variety of content offerings: from the 360-degree natural sounds captured from the forests of Idukki to an interesting interview with a local underworld don from the Mattancherry suburbs in Kochi.

One of the highlights of Aarpoy’s first season is the theatrical adaptation of the memoirs of Amanullah, who, over many decades, helped Gulf expatriates deal with their trials and tribulations. Actor-scriptwriter Sreenivasan acts as the lead character in this episode by lending his voice.

Film editor-director B Ajithkumar, who is part of the collective, told Adgully that Aarpoy has been envisaged as a platform that will cater to a discerning audience who are looking for quality curated audio content, which is neither esoteric nor appealing to low-brow tastes.

“We realised there is a gap for an audio platform like this. Apart from the usual fare, there will be film-based programmes such as interviews with actors, etc. We want to ensure quality in content above one notch,” he said.

He informed that the platform will be adopting a hybrid revenue model. “Apart from advertisements, going forward, we plan to adopt a strategy by making some segments of content available as premium,” said Ajithkumar.

He further added that the platform will adopt total transparency when it comes to sharing revenues with content creators. “Big platforms like Spotify have come under the scanner over its alleged reluctance to share revenue with the creators in a just manner. We, at Aarpoy, will maintain total transparency in this regard. We are in the process of an affiliate platform for sharing revenue with content creators,” he concluded.
