MIB bans telecast of condom ads from 6 am to 10 pm

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has issued an advisory to all TV channels directing them not to telecast advertisements of condoms during day time and evening prime time. The Ministry has allowed telecast of such ads only between 10 pm and 6 am.

MIB has said that this was done in order to avoid exposure of “such material” to children and to ensure strict adherence to the provisions contained in the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994, which specifically states that “indecent, vulgar, suggestive, repulsive or offensive themes or treatment shall be avoided in all advertisements”.

The Ministry also drew the attention of the TV channels to Rule 7 (7) of the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994, which also states that “No advertisement which endangers the safety of children or creates in them any interest in unhealthy practices or shows them begging or in an undignified or indecent manner shall not be carried in the cable service.”

MIB’s advisory comes after the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) had approached the Ministry on the airing of such ads, stating that the Council had received numerous complaints about such ads. ASCI had raised concerns about airing of such ads during day time and prime time on television, which are watched by children.
