MIB directs BARC to abolish adoption of landing channels

As per media reports, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has directed the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to abolish the adoption of landing channels in order to map television audience measurement.

The ministry looks at the use of landing channels as a violation of the provisions of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). In the letter written to the BARC, it advised the body to stop generating ratings of channels that do not adhere to TRAI regulations.

Following the order, TRAI has issued a statement mentioning that some TV channels in accordance with the distributors allegedly placed some channels on multiple logical channel numbers (LCNs), thus influencing TV ratings.
