#MomentMarketing: How brands are reacting to PUBG ban in India
The Government of India yesterday (September 2, 2020) banned an additional 118 Chinese apps in the third such directive. The latest ban comes close on the heels of Chinese troops’ transgressions into Indian territory in Pangong Tso, Ladakh.
Ever since the ban was announced, social media has been agog with lamentations of the ban also including highly popular game – PUGB (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds). PUBG is associated with Chinese MNC Tencent. The ban on the Battle Royale game has not just broken gamers’ hearts, but has also driven massive conversations on social media ranging from heartfelt posts to extremely funny memes.
Incidentally, the ban involves PUBG Mobile and PUBG Mobile Lite, but gamers can still play on PCs and gaming consoles.
Meanwhile, brands, too, have joined the conversations in their own ways – from poetic word plays to funny puns. A look at how PUBG is dominating brands’ social media feeds...
Swiggy
Swiggy showcases the infamous Pan from PUBG asks its followers to actually start using it. With this hilarious CTA, Swiggy also asks followers to zoom into the pan, where the message “Swiggy Grocery Delivers in 2 hours” appears.
Cure.fit
Cure.fit recognises the low spirits of all PUBG players and says “Winner Winner Getting Fitter” – a hilarious yet positive word play on the famous slogan of all PUBG players. Cure.fit says that you don’t need extra lives when you can go hard on this one and that a chicken dinner is great after a heavy workout and burning some calories.
Spreading great positivity, Cure.fit encourages people to join its platform for a workout of their choice.
Big Bazaar
In yet another hilarious word play, Big Bazaar asks its followers to always remember to eat their greens and stay healthy.
Cheelizza
One of our favourite ones, Cheelizza uses the famous PUBG terminology to show how they are always there to get the spirits high. Cheelizza says that they are always there to ‘Revive’ you when you are ‘Knocked Out’.
Dunzo
Aah! The classic Dunzo Puns! Dunzo says that if you are already missing a ‘Chicken Dinner’, they can surely bring it for you, “Ban” on time. Hilarious!
Parle G
Parle G uses their name for a PUBG word play and says that while your play time partner is gone, your chai time partner will always be there!
There are also several PUBG memes featuring Dhoni as the former international cricket captain’s love for PUBG is well documented.
