Nat Geo Green Conclave'10: India ahead in sustainability

Every year, across the globe, National Geographic Channel undertakes initiatives to create awareness around conservation and global warming. Committed to the National Geographic Society's endeavor to promote conservation, exploration and education, National Geographic Channel organized the Nat Geo Green Conclave 2010 'Leadership for our planet at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi today. The Conclave served as an exclusive national platform to discuss, debate and determine the path forward for our planet. The day long conclave drew in specific panel discussions on India's position on each of the relevant issues and brings together India's politicians, business leaders, corporate leaders and conservationists all under one roof to discuss the future of our planet and our role going forward. The conclave was inaugurated by honorable Union Minister for Human Resource - Kapil Sibal, Terry Garcia ' EVP Missions National Geographic Society and Uday Shankar, CEO Star Network.

Terry Garcia, during his presentation revealed facts from the third annual Greendex survey conducted by National Geographic Society along with GlobeScan earlier this year. The 17-country survey looked at consumer behaviors that have an impact on the environment, including their transportation patterns, household energy and resource use, and consumption of food and everyday consumer goods, and what consumers were doing to minimize that impact. According to the survey India has emerged as the leader in sustainability front. The survey reveals that Indians are becoming increasingly more conscious about overcoming environment hazards as compared to countries like USA, Europe and other Asian Countries.

The conclave drew in 4 panel discussions on relevant topics related to environment. Starting with the opening panel will be on ' "The Great Energy Debate ' setting context on climate change and the energy crisis'. Followed by the next panel ' "Bringing about enterprise accountability and the concept of triple bottom line' and lastly the closing panel on - "The impact Information Communication Technology is making in promoting future sustainable business practices"

Followed by a special debate hosted by Rajiv Makhni, Editor-Technology, NDTV and anchor of Gadget Guru and other Tech shows across NDTV Network, on the topic "Does technology owe ecology an apology". Nat Geo and NDTV will also display modern gadgets available in the market today that are edgy, stylish and yet eco friendly. The objective is to allow consumers today to make the right choice.

As part of this unique initiative, Nat Geo also announced the results of the unique initiative called Eco Heroes. Eco Heroes is an initiative by Nat Geo to acknowledge and stage the extraordinary work that ordinary people across the country are undertaking to make a difference to our planet. The channel ran a call for entry and short-listed 5 deserving candidates. These Eco-Heroes were recognized and awarded at the Conclave.
