NBA unhappy with Chairman, Press Council of India!

A Press Release was issued on 30th August 2012 by News Broadcasters Association (NBA).

They are extremely disappointed with the latest Resolution released by the Chairman of Press Council of India  (PCI) .The  meeting held on 27th August 2012 was to initiate a suitable legislation to amend  their present Act to  bring the electronic media viz. broadcast as well as social media within the purview of the PCI and rename it The Media Council. In this regard The News Broadcasters Association has reacted strongly to this statement.

The NBA is not in favour of this move since it goes against the self regulatory mechanism that has been present since last several years which contributed in creating a positive impact where improving broadcasting standards was concerned.

It is to be noted that  a similar statement was issued by the Chairman PCI in 2011 and NBA had reacted then by writing to the Hon’ble Prime Minister in opposition of the move and bringing to his notice the achievements of the self regulatory body .

To their disappointment no action was taken then and NBA remains in the same position as before. To prove their point once again to PCI they have attached their earlier letter written to the Prime Minister alongwith this correspondence.

IN view of the mandate the Chairman  has under the Press Council Act, NBA requests him to engage with print and media matters constructively and request him to decline from commenting on areas which are outside his jurisdiction.
