NDTV most viewed English news channel on YouTube; Aaj Tak tops Hindi

YouTube has been a big boon for all Indian news channels irrespective of the language in which they create content. The viewership of all leading news channels on YouTube has seen rapid growth, and most profoundly post the launch of Reliance Jio in India. 

Vidooly’s ‘Indian News Industry Report on YouTube’ showcases the viewership stats for news channels in 13 languages along with deep-dive insights of Top 10 YouTube channels in terms of viewership. The top 4 major events were considered in the report out of many events happened during the period January-August 2019. In deep-dive insights for the Top 10 news channels on YouTube, over 100,000 videos were analysed to categorise them into various news categories, types of uploads and on the basis of major events mentioned above.   

English news channels on YouTube 

55 leading English News channels were considered from YouTube that account for a total of 2.51 billion views during the period Jan ’19 – Aug’19. 

Top 10 channels in terms of viewership:

  1. NDTV
  2. India Today
  3. The Quint
  4. Hindustan Times
  5. Indian Express Online
  6. CNN-News18
  7. Republic World
  8. The Times of India
  9. Times Now
  10. The Wire

NDTV (552.14 million) is the most viewed YouTube channel in English language followed by India Today (232.17 million) and The Quint (189.94 million). These top 3 channels have a viewership share of almost 38.79 per cent for English news channels on YouTube. 

54.84 per cent of the viewership is from traditional news channels on YouTube, clearly showcasing the closing gap between traditional and digital only news channel in English language. 

February 2019 accounted for 14.46 per cent of total viewership. Major News during this period include the Pulwama Attacks and Balakot Strikes. April 2019 accounted for 15.16 per cent of the total viewership, the highest share of viewership between Jan’19-Aug’19 for news channels in English language on YouTube. 

May 2019 accounted for 15.04 per cent of the total viewership. Major Event: The Lok Sabha Elections 2019. The months of June and July 2019 accounted for 10.23 per cent and 10.75 per cent share of the total viewership, respectively. Major Event: ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. August 2019 accounted for 14.44 per cent of the total viewership. Major events: Abrogation of Article 370 and 73rd Independence Day. 

Hindi news channels on YouTube 

128 leading Hindi News channels were considered from YouTube that account for a total of 21.63 billion views during the period January-August 2019. 

Top 10 channels in terms of viewership:

  2. ABP News
  3. India TV
  4. ABP News Hindi
  5. The Lallantop
  6. Zee News
  7. NMF News
  8. News Tak
  9. NDTV
  10. Bharat Tak

Aaj Tak (2.15 billion) is the most viewed YouTube channel in Hindi language, followed by ABP News (1.79 billion) and India TV (1.78 billion). The top 3 channels have a viewership share of almost 26.42 per cent for Hindi News channels on YouTube. 

62 per cent of the viewership is from traditional news channels on YouTube. 

February 2019 accounted for 16.53 per cent of total viewership. Major news during this period included the Pulwama Attacks and Balakot Strikes. Share of viewership in February 2019 is the highest for news channels in Hindi language on YouTube between Jan’19-Aug’19. 

May 2019 accounted for 14.43 per cent of the total viewership. Major Event: The Lok Sabha Elections 2019. 

The months of June and July 2019 accounted for 10.25 per cent and 12.68 per cent share of the total viewership, respectively. Major event: ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. August 2019 accounted for 15.25 per cent of the total viewership. Major event: Abrogation of Article 370 and 73rd Independence Day.
