Offbeat: Chirag Joshi - Lighting up life with drones, deejaying, long-haul bike rides

Adgully’s special feature section – ‘Offbeat’ – seeks to give a glimpse of the lesser known facets of our very well-known industry leaders. We present, in the industry leaders’ own words, an interesting read on areas that are not usually highlighted in regular media coverage – be it about their childhood days, secret skills that they possess, how they unwind from their hectic schedules, and much more.

Chirag Joshi, Head of Marketing, Samco Securities, is a marketing professional with extensive experience in revenue generation, brand solutions, client relationship management and conceptualising media properties with India’s leading media brands.

Being a multi-tasker, Joshi is now heading overall brand and marketing communications department at Samco. He is also a part of Samco’s Core Business team and handles the management and execution of business operations right from hiring resources to setting up new departments and processes.

How were you as a child and which childhood trait do you still possess?
As a child I was curious as a cat! As against just playing with toys, I would dismantle them completely to figure how they were made. Then I would assemble them again.

This is a quality that I have with me even today. This eagerness to learn is what has contributed significantly towards my professional journey as well.

Which superhero did you look up to as a kid and why? Which superhero power you wish you possessed?
Somehow, superheroes never were my thing. Instead, I just loved Dexter from the cartoon serial ‘Dexter’s Laboratory’. What I found great about him was that he was a real kid with no unreal “supernatural” powers and he used his intelligence to make himself unique.

What is your biggest fear and how do you face it?
As a child, I have been hydrophobic. However, thanks to my friends, I have finally figured a way to get past this fear.

A skill you possess that no one knows about?
Deejaying! When I was younger, I bought myself a good set of sound systems and would deejay at parties on weekends. This would help me make some extra money as well. Not many know about this.

What would one find in your playlist?
Soundtracks by Bryan Adams and Ronan Keating.

Your go-to activity to relax?
Playing with my RC Drones, camping and long-haul bike rides.

What is the greatest lesson that you have learnt from life so far?
Your capabilities and accomplishments are limited to the power of your dreams and thoughts.

A social cause that you are most passionate about?
As a biker, road safety is something I feel very passionate about.

What’s the one thing you would like to change about yourself?
I would love to be a little taller!

If not Head of Marketing at Samco Securities, what would you have been?
I find myself extremely passionate about travelling. If not at my current role, I would love to be a full-time travel blogger.

What are the three apps on your mobile that you couldn’t live without?
Whatsapp, Google Maps and Samco Trader.

What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
I recently watched ‘Crown’ on Netflix, probably because I found the poster attractive!

Which two organisations outside your own do you know the most people at and why?
On account of being a part of the industry for so many years, I have built good relations with several people across organisations. However, since I was associated with TV18 and Hindustan Times for long periods of my career, I will have to say these are the two organisations where I know the most people.

Two things about this industry you don’t like or don’t understand?
I don’t think there is anything I don’t like about media and advertising.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Leh, without a doubt!
