Parle Golu Galata enters in Guinness Book of World Records

This festive season of Golu, India's largest biscuit and confectionery brand Parle Products entered the Guinness Book of World Records. Parle's Golu Galata became the first and only festival where highest number of Dolls were present at the Island ground, Chennai.

Over the last six years, Parle has been at the forefront of trying to revive the dying tradition of Golu Dolls prepared by people in Tamil Nadu during the Navratri festival. This year, Parle asked all participants to come together to participate in community Golu by displaying their Golus at a common location in Chennai's Island Grounds during the festival. Participation of a large number of people helped Parle achieve its goal and create a world record.

The officials from Guinness Book of World Records did not only audit Parle's record, but also presented prizes for the best dolls. Parle also successfully involved the school children and the youth of the state to participate in the event.

GOLU, also known as "Navaratri Golu", is celebrated actively during nine days of Navaratri festival in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pardesh and Karnataka. In Tamil Nadu, traditionally, women decorate various dolls (called Golus/Kolus) made of clay during Navratri celebrations by setting up odd number steps and keeping Golus on it. This display is well decorated and friends and relatives are invited to witness the same. Through a detailed research, Parle found that due to time pressures, this tradition is slowly dying and is getting restricted to a select few households. Thus, to revive the fading/dying tradition, Parle introduced this novel promotion called Parle Golu Galata contest in 2005. Golu means Doll & Galata means festival/Carnival/Dhammal.

Speaking on the impending achievement for Parle, Mayank Shah, Group Product Manager, Parle Products said, "The event at Island Ground which includes organizing maximum number of Golu Dolls at one place during the festival is culmination of efforts put consciously over last 6 years to educate & popularize the festival among the youth in Tamil Nadu. Achieving the distinction of Parle's Golu Galata entering Guinness Book of World Records is the recognition of the fact that we have progressed in the right direction towards achieving our goal. For us as a company, it is a matter of immense pride that today Parle Golu Galata is becoming synonymous with the Golu festival across Tamil Nadu. I am sure that over the next few years we will set several more records similar to this year's."

To create more awareness about Golu and Parle's aim, the company has also created a special website ' www.parlegolugalata.com' for the event. The site is a one stop destination to inform everyone about the initiative and its developments.
