Pay DTH subscriber base at 69.86 mn in Q1; Tata Sky leads with 33.37% market share

Even as broadcasters gear up for implementing TRAI-mandated new tariff order (NTO 2.0), the telecom regulator in its Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report for the Quarter ending June 30, 2021, has revealed that Pay DTH has attained total active subscriber base of around 69.86 million. This is in addition to the subscribers of the DD Free Dish (the free DTH services of Doordarshan). The total active DTH subscriber base has increased from 69.57 million in March 2021 to 69.86 million in June 2021.

Since its introduction in the year 2003, Indian DTH service has displayed a phenomenal growth. During the quarter ending June 30, 2021, there were 4 pay DTH service providers in India.

As per TRAI’s report, Tata Sky is the No. 1 DTH operator in the country for the quarter ending April-June’21, with its subscriber base seeing a hike to 33.37% from 33.3%. On the other hand, Dish TV saw a drop in its market share – from 24.09% to 23.45%.

A total of 915 private satellite TV channels have been permitted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) for uplinking only/ downlinking only/ both uplinking & downlinking, as on June 30, 2021. As per the reporting done by broadcasters in pursuance of the Tariff Order dated March 3, 2017 as amended, there are 346 satellite pay TV channels, as on June 30, 2021, which includes 252 SD satellite pay TV channels and 94 HD satellite pay TV channels. Apart from these pay channels reported to TRAI, all other channels permitted by MIB may be considered as Free to Air (FTA) channels.

The country has achieved 100% digitisation of Cable TV network. As on June 30, 2021, there are 1,731 MSOs registered with MIB. Further, as per the data reported by MSOs and HITS operators, there are 12 MSOs and 1 HITS operator who have subscriber base greater than 1 million.
