Pay DTH subscriber base sees a dip in March 2021 to 69.57 mn

Since the introduction of the DTH Sector in the year 2003, Indian DTH (direct[1]to-home) services have displayed a phenomenal growth. As of the first quarter ending March 31, 2021, there were 4 pay DTH service providers in the country.

Pay DTH has attained a total active subscriber base of around 69.57 million. This is in addition to the subscribers of the DD Free Dish (free DTH services of Doordarshan). However, the total active subscriber base has decreased from 70.99 million in December 2020 to 69.57 million in March 2021, as per the Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicators released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for the period January-March 2021.

As per the report, a total of 901 private satellite TV channels have been permitted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) for uplinking only/ downlinking only/ both uplinking & downlinking, as on March 31, 2021.

As per the reporting done by broadcasters in pursuance of the Tariff Order dated March 3, 2017 as amended, there are 327 satellite pay TV channels, as on March 31, 2021, which includes 235 SD satellite pay TV channels and 92 HD satellite pay TV channels. Apart from these pay channels reported to TRAI, all other channels permitted by MIB may be considered as Free to Air (FTA) channels.

The country has achieved 100% digitisation of Cable TV network. This is a stupendous achievement making India as the only large country where 100% digital cable has been achieved through mandatory regulations.

As on March 31, 2021, there are 1,726 MSOs registered with the MIB. Further, as per the data reported by MSOs/ HITS operators, there are 12 MSOs and 1 HITS operator, who have subscriber base of more than 1 million. Siti Networks tops the list with the highest total active subscriber base of 82.53 lakh.
